ENGLISH VERSION

Traslation curated by Thirza Ember. Thank Thirza!

The Neapolitan poems of Carmen Auletta are the starting point for an exciting new project combining poetry and art.
Carmen (Margye Riba in SL) is an award-winning poet from Naples, whose work has received international recognition as well as being used in school textbooks. The culture and language of the city of Naples is well-known for its rich range of humor, emotions, and passion. Perhaps the most famous figure is Eduardo de Filippo http://www.enotes.com/twentieth-century-criticism/filippo-eduardo-de He was one of the most important figures of the Italian stage in the 20th century. Like de Filippo, Carmen's themes are those of the common man or woman, those universal sentiments that affect us all, wherever we are from.

The Art&Poetry Project is divided into two parts:
    1.    An exhibition of Carmen's poems and associated works
    2.    A related show, involving dynamic artwork inspired by Carmen's poems and that will be traveling to various venues across the grid.

Information regarding the traveling show
    •    Fifteen of Carmen's poems have been chosen and will be published in both Neapolitan and English on the MdM website.
    •    Sixty artists working in a wide variety of media, including architecture, design, photography, machinima, performance artists and so forth, will be invited to create a piece of art based on the poems.
    •    The type of artwork, deadlines and logistics of the show will be subject to a set of clearly defined guidelines.
    •    Those wishing to participate should send a short bio together with two photos of their work, or a link to their website, to museodelmetaverso@gmail.com no later than August 31, 2011.
    •    All participants are invited to join the Museo del Metaverso in Facebook etc, where they will be able to to follow the progress of the project via a group and a dedicated blog.
    •    The two shows will be opening both in OpenSim Craft, on sim Museo del Metaverso, and in Second Life, on sim Pyramid. The traveling show will be relocated in a different region each week. We will be looking for sim owners who have experience in hosting artistic events.
    •    Each week, four artists will show their pieces inspired by Carmen Auletta's poems, available in Italian 9and soon in English) under the tab “Art and Poetry” http://www.museodelmetaverso.it/page/programma-schedule of the MdM website. The art will be on show from Thursday to Sunday, beginning on September 21 2011, both in OpenSim Craft at the Museo del Metaverso, and in the various host regions in SL. This means that the participants will have 4 days = 1 for setting up. All art will be removed on the last evening of the exhibition, or at the latest by Monday, to make room for the next set of artworks.
    •    Each week, selected poems will be shared in Voice, and we hope that many Neapolitan residents will take the opportunity to share their rich accent and dialect with the audience, by reading one of carmen's poems out loud.

ITALIAN VERSION

Art&Poetry Project
"Art&Poetry”
Call for artists

1.    una  mostra  dedicata all'autrice con le sue poesie dipinte e tutta la documentazione che Carmen vorrà esibire ai suoi estimatori;

Dettagli:

per la seconda mostra saranno scelte  20 poesie in lingua napoletana e pubbicate in una apposita sezione del sito web del Museo del Metaverso (http://www.museodelmetaverso.it/page/artpoetry-project)-(http://www.museodelmetaverso.it/page/programma-schedule);
gli artisti, in numero di 120,  potranno partecipare ad invito, al fine di garantire una varietà di generi, che abbraccino tutte le discipline artistiche (performance e video inclusi);

FAQ

Art&Poetry Project FAQs

* What is the Museo del Metaverso's Art & Poetry event?
The Art & Poetry project brings together digital artists and the vivid verses of renowned Neapolitan poet Carmen Auletta. Her work captures not only the city of her birth but also the universal themes of love and memory, childhood and death.

 * I want to choose a poem! Where can I read them?
The poems are available both in the original Neapolitan dialect, and also in English translation on the MdM website at http://www.museodelmetaverso.it/page/programma-schedule, The idea is that each artist should choose one poem that appeals to them, and make a piece of artwork (sculpture, machinima, painting, installation etc., depending on their field) that reflects their reaction to that specific poem.

 * What do I do once I have chosen a poem? When you've chosen the poem you'd like to illustrate, you need to SIGN UP.

 * Who do I contact ? You need to contact Roxelo Babenco, at museodelmetaverso@gmail.com you can also contact her via the Art&Poetry Groups on Koinup amd Flickr.

 * Why do I need to contact Roxelo? So she can give you logistical details! Each week we will be showcasing a different poem, in a different sim, together with the work by the artists who chose that poem. Each sim or gallery has its own prim limits, so it's important you sign up and confirm which poem/week/sim you're going to be working on.

 * Where will the project events be held?
The project is going to be running in both SL and OpenSim.
All the poems and artwork will be shown on the home sims of the Museo del Metaverso, in craft-world.org. as a permanent exhibition throughout the length of the project.

 * ONE POEM, MULTIPLE ARTWORK, ONE WEEK.  In SL, the project will be traveling to different sims. Every week, a selected poem by Carmen Auletta will be put on show, together with the art it has inspired, for one week only. You can get a weekly rundown of the poems and the artists, and the sims where they are going to be on show from Roxelo, or by going to the Museodelmetaverso website, or checking in with the Art&Poetry groups. Since these are temporary exhibits, artists will be asked to promptly put up and take down their work according to a strict timetable, so please check your mail and notices. Your artwork will be on show for an extended time in Craft. You will also be able to follow the project through the Art&Poetry group on both KoinUp and Flickr.

http://youtu.be/g5mxIicAWHw?hd=1

Let me say it the Naples way...
This morning, I woke up, thinking how
speaking Italian everyday
I miss my point somehow...

I tell you, I have words so above
Italian only lets me down
Truth is, I am in love
with these feelings, this sound.

I insist that it pleases me more so --
it alone can express what's inside,
And as I write my heart is aglow,
For a moment I'm free, alight.

THE MASK
Today I am just picking up dust.
O, to do even a bit of good! but
Everything I try turns to rust --
And a pit remains in my gut.

If only I could be of higher cheer!
Instead, I pretend I'm fine,
I try to make happy all far and near --
And no one can tell when I lie.

Now I understand why the clown goes
With painted face and smile all nice,
Even though he's sad, from his neck to toes --
And inside he cries -- just the outside is ice.

THE VIOLINIST's MESSAGE
As soon as I read this note,
'Carmen, get ready, I'm on my way
and you know what fun I have with my violin
I'm coming to Naples, playing it for you.'

These words really cheered me up
they shook me out of my melancholy
I really liked this message
it set my imagination on fire right away

Thinking of you, with your instrument in your hand
and all the musicians, in the middle of a little concert
I see you playing for me off in the distance
sweetly coming to me, to the sound of the violin

LET'S MAKE PEACE

I thought you were transparent,
now you even removed the greeting,
I pretend nothing happened,
but I don't like seeing you hangry.

Now, tell me how should I make peace with you,
apologies didn't work.
I didn't convince you yet,
the more I'm true and the more you are not trusting me.

This night I didn't sleep,
I closed my eyes and rested,
I dream to stay with you cuddled,
but I don't feel warmth in your arms.

You don't give up even to these words,
and yet they are a nice serenade.
Now tell me which excuse you will find
for keeping in being crossed with me.

Avvolta
nel suo mantello,
come una piuma

'A MUNNEZZA A NAPULE

Che t’aggio a dicere cumpagno mio,

GARBAGE IN NAPLES

What should I tell you, my friend,
I'm too much suffering from this situation,
every Neapolitan is and not me alone.
I'm waiting like you for a solution.

It's true, we became - by now - a joke
from the the far away watching world.
Despising this infected Neaple.
Camorra (racket) particularly created this marsh.

Even politics is involved, you say,
and yes, fish always stinks from the head,
it seems it is not focusing on this,
doesn't take an action eventually successful.

And what are we doing as each individual?
For too long time we have been deceived.
Each of us is at their own fault,
we didn't behave really good.

And you say why? What's our involvement with this?
We are involved because to the evil people,
we keep in giving honor.
They corrupted our heart and the mind too.

MARGARITA's LAMENT
I am a simple and gentle flower
and you always want to pick a fight.
You knew he was the kind to wander
but you said that you had him tight.

I told you right off the bat:
"That one will love you and leave."
But you didn't listen to that
and now you cry and grieve.

Now you're angry at me and I can't see
why everyday you question me!
"Does he love me, does he not?" Well--
why do you want to make my life hell

 THE SCENT OF LOVE
You sense  the air, speaking of summer,
Spreading the scent of ripe fruit.
In the sun, the corn is golden yellow
Glimmering with a thousand shades.

 Butterflies darting to and fro.
Hover over the flowers
Fluttering  under a turquoise sky,
Delighting all of the children
that in the air would wish to fly.

The colors of the elegant flowers
Speak to me of the scent of love,
In this aira of musical dance,
I linger  under the trees, among this concert

ON THE ROCK
(Poem read at ONU in New York)
How strange is this melancholy,
the heart, imprisoned into a rock,
tries to get rid of this sickness,
but has no strength, it's uncomforted

The wave dashes on this rock,
it comes and fades in as the thoughts do,
this white foam wets my soul,
talks to me as a counselor does

And with me is this voice of the sea
that calmed me little by little,
making me leave behind all the bitterness
that was preserved into my heart.

THE PAINTED FANTASY
I don't know if it appeared by magic,
if I have been there in a dream,
or if i have in mind a photograph--
but I have never forgotten it since.

It is a strange place, a little house
Almost hidden by a church in rose.
There is a sea where a little boat
is at rest, its oars slack, in repose.

Then one morning, when I awoke,
This image remained in my mind,
Strange to say, but it happened just so--
My brushes have a will of their own.

I sit down at the easel,
the colors select themselves,
and I know not by what guide
the painter's art appears.

The canvas is happy and dry,
All prettied and dressed to go.
All it needs is a frame--
Like a necklace to adorn its fame.

THE BOAT
For a fantasy voyage I step on board
To take a load off my mind
Where I sail is of no import--
I go to be alone and in kind.

Ah, how my mind flails,
It doesn't know whence it came!
But if it embarks on pretty sails,
its fears slowly begin to wane.

I don't yet know where I shall land
but truly hope that while I sail
I shall see things to make me glad
since life on shore is much travail

NEW THINGS
I pass my gaze over the wet sand
Absorbed by the sea that comes and goes
Carrying things that burrow holes
Drilling into this heart, and that does no good.

Like the waves that get hold of the sand
And get carried back out to sea
So am I, chained to this great pain
In search of less bitter thoughts.

The waves tell of new things
The sea speaks of them after the storm
And now it's calm, it wakes me with its sound
Bringing me a little bit of party in the  breeze

A WICKED HAND
Like a picture, my life has been
painted in the best of colors
all the lovely moments of this life
have been imprinted with a brush.

And I was bewitched, every day
with brush strokes, ever more fine
I wanted to paint every moment
beginning first thing in the morning.

"Wow, how nice it is,' people would say,
'This painting, done with such finesse
and so precisely taken from life,
It's a really lovely work of art.'

And yet, my love, I wonder
why this wicked hand of yours
has so badly damaged this picture
and ruined my whole life!

A FISHER'S LOVE

Carmenella stands at the window looking out,
Her heart beats for a lobster fisherman,
Longing to see him for at least one hour.

With the sea in his  eyes and skin,
Yet stunned by this passionate love,
The fisherman waits for Carmenella,
Desiring  to go over the tossing waves.

A breeze carries the smell of the sea,
Pregnant with  this love that is sincere,
The music of sailors from afar, sing of thoughts of love.

And slowly rocks the cradle of love,
gently caressing  the wake,
you sleep tight, heart to heart, hoping to meet,
even in a dream.

I AM A DOLL
Her mother always told that girl,
'If you settle for the first to turn your head,
you mustn't be surprised at all
if you go off him, once you're wed.

You have a pretty doll's face dear,
rich men will want to win you from the rest,
so now's the time to put your brain into gear,
and see how you can profit best.'

The daughter, who thought just the same,
said, 'I know that I'm a honey,
whenever some guy tries his game,
first I'll check if he's got money.'

A doll has eyes but cannot see,
and deaf, she sinks into the hole
fooled by the riches possessed, she
doesn't know she's damned her soul

THE ALLEY
I can't help it, I can't do a thing
To see this place makes my heart wring
Maybe I'm strange, but I can't be glad
Seeing this alley makes me sad

And that alley, I recall
It was my home when I was small
I played in peace and harmony
With all the other kids like me

I get a lump in my throat, if I go there now,
right where there's still that great atmosphere
when we never missed a chance
to have some games and fun

And sometimes I'll wander down that street
And think of the follks that I used to meet
And it makes me feel blue, when I see
What runs through my head and my memory

CHILDREN OF NAPLES
Children  who have  lost  their innocence,
they meet in their thousand in the city,
living in great pain
and we  pretend of not to see.

We must cure this sickness of Naples,
which is within the eyes of these children,
a  look of beaten and flayed hopes,
the misery takes hold of them by the hair.

The real school teaches the way,
work or go to steal,
you find them also in the suburbs,
where the Gang of thieves comes to exploit them.

The world sees them in postcards,
because they are  folklore, they are beautiful,
but together with the pizza and  mandolin,
they do not speak of the suffering of Naples.

E menu male, io sempe me ripiglio,

e si ce sta n’ora bona, io m’ha piglio,

SAD HEART

I want to know why my heart is sad,
I have the motivation to be even happy!
Maybe it's because I always think on future
and on my beautiful past.

I'm filling my head with songs,
and it seems like I'm winning the gloom.
I acknowledge it is just an illusion,
after a while nostalgy comes back.

Good thing that I soon recover,
because life is wonderfule even with suffering
and if the good moment arrives, I'll catch it,
and the bad one, I accept it with patience!

LUNA JANCA
Jesce fora luna janca
fa vedè ca si lucente,
nun me dicere "so' stanca"
ca tu sierve a stu mumento.

 Vavattenne luna nera,
nun vai bbona pe’ dduje core
ca se 'ncontrano stasera
pe' cunoscere ll’ammore.

E se sente  'ncopp’ 'a pelle
'o profumo 'e chist’ardore,
fanno festa pur’ 'e stelle
ca pruteggiono ll’ammore.

Luna janca addò si ghiuta,
pur’ 'o Sole sta dicenno

ca sti dduje vanno sperenno.

 Trasetenne Luna Nera,
nun te vonno int' 'a sta festa,

tutt' ’o Cielo te prutesta.

WHITE MOON

Come in, White Moon,
let's see how bright are you
don't tell me "I'm tired"
we need you right now

Go away Black Moon
you don't suit these two
meeting this night
to know love.

You can feel on the skin
the smell of the passion,
stars are partying too
protecting Love.

White Moon where did you go?
Even the Sun is saying
to not loose minutes,
these two are suffering.

Go away Black Moon
they don't want you at this party
if you don't go away now
all the Sky will reject you.

NA PAROLA

E ancora chiove , chiove tutte ‘e juorne,
stu cielo è niro e pure ll’aria manca.
Nun me rassegno ca tu chiù nun tuorne
e tengo nu dulore ca me sfianca.

Vulesse mò na cosa sulamente,
nu squillo 'e campaniello fora ‘a porta,
me serve p’allevià chistu mumento,

tenevo dint’ ‘o core sotto ‘o ghiaccio.

E mò che me ne faccio ' e stu tesoro,

A SINGLE WORD

It's still raining, it rains everyday,
sky is black and I'm missing air
I don't give up that you won't come back
I feel a pain that is wearing me out.

I just wished only a thing.
A bell ring at my door,
to soothe this moment,
it's a torture no one can stand

All the words I didn't tell you,
I close them with a bolt,
and like a treasure on a written map,
I kept them under ice in my heart.

What should I do with this treasure,
if my Love never knew.
This good more worthy than gold,
I just understood now that it is gone.

'O VICOLO

E' cchiù forte 'e me, nun ce riesco,
me se stregne 'o core accussì vedenno,
songo strana, forse, ma nun gioisco,
veco stu vicolo ca stà suffrenno.

Quann’ero piccerella m’arricordo,
chillu vicolo era ‘a casa mia,
pazziavo in comune accordo
cu tutt’ ‘e criature 'e chella via.

Si ce passe mò, me piglia nu magone,
addò stà cchiù chella bella atmosfera,
quanno nun mancava ll’occasione

mò che ‘a veco, me vene ’a malincunia
pe’ ricordi ca me veneno  a mente.

THE ALLEY
I can't help it, I can't do a thing
To see this place makes my heart wring
Maybe I'm strange, but I can't be glad
Seeing this alley makes me sad

And that alley, I recall
It was my home when I was small
I played in peace and harmony
With all the other kids like me

I get a lump in my throat, if I go there now,
right where there's still that great atmosphere
when we never missed a chance
to have some games and fun

And sometimes I'll wander down that street
And think of the follks that I used to meet
And it makes me feel blue, when I see
What runs through my head and my memory
